Mike's Workshop Notebook
Back in 2023, Woodcraft of Cleveland hosted a Cutting Board Workshop taught by Alex Snodgrass — a nationally recognized bandsaw expert known for his precision approach to setup and technique. A friend of mine, Ed, encouraged me to sign up and take the class with him. It didn’t take much convincing.
The workshop focused on accurate bandsaw work, proper milling techniques, careful glue-ups, and the specific considerations involved in building an end-grain cutting board. End-grain construction, of course, requires careful attention to squareness and alignment during milling so that the glue joints remain tight and the final surface finishes cleanly.
We worked with cherry, maple, and walnut — a classic hardwood combination that not only looks great but machines beautifully. The board was finished with Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner, a combination food-grade mineral oil with natural waxes that enhances the natural grain while providing a durable, kitchen-safe surface.
Ed, being Ed, added his own refinement to the project: integrated finger slots for easier handling and a finish recommendation based on his experience. A thoughtful improvement — thanks, Ed!
