Welcome to my workshop.

A journal of what I'm building and how: builds, machining notes, and the occasional "don't do what I did" details.

Workshop Log: My current project is a Westinghouse Style Water Pump in 1.5" scale. What makes this pump especially interesting to me—and the reason I chose to model it—is the way it operates. A small pilot (control) valve actuates a shuttle valve that alternately directs steam to each end of the double-acting steam cylinder. What makes the design particularly clever is that the pilot valve is operated by a push rod running through the center of the main piston rod. As the piston reaches the end of its stroke, the push rod shifts the pilot valve, which reverses the shuttle valve and redirects steam to the opposite side of the steam cylinder. The result is a simple, fully automatic reversing system that requires no external linkage.
